Two major milestones have been recently
achieved for the house that the Webster Churches Habitat
Coalition has been building for Flower City Habitat for
Humanity. First, in late February, the eight Coalition member
churches joyfully learned that fund raising for the project
had been completed. Funds to cover the total expenditures,
which exceeded $68,300, had been received and there was $38.50
left over to provide seed money for a future Coalition
project.
Second, in early March, the Coalition
received the wonderful news that its house at 139 Fulton
Avenue had a homeowner. Hector Aponte and his wife Suzette
Rodriquez and their two children, Darwin (age 17) and Geordy
(age 7) have selected this house to be their home. They are
excited about leaving an apartment in public housing to move
into their own beautiful home. When they move in, the
Coalition will conclude the project with a Dedication Ceremony
for them, which WPC members may want to attend to congratulate
and meet the family.
The Coalition extends a resounding “thank
you” to all the WPC members that gave generously to help
build this Habitat house. Nearly 14% of the total funds raised
were directly attributable to WPC contributions. The Webster
Coalition also received a generous contribution from the
Penfield Churches Coalition, which gave nearly 11% of the
total from their fund raising efforts to support building
their Habitat house in 2004. In addition, many members of WPC
made additional financial contributions by supporting
Coalition fund raising activities.
Besides the financial support, a special
“thank you” is extended to the many WPC members, who
contributed their time and talents to participate in fund
raising activities and to help build the house. Special “thanks”
are also extended to the WPC members who participated in the
project planning activities, construction scheduling, and
specific fund raising programs. These include: Irv Crane (WPC
Liaison), Shirley Crane (Fund Raising and Publicity
Chairwoman), and Tony Hubbard (In-Kind Donations Co-Chairman),
who worked on the Coalition Steering Committee; Bob Smith (WPC
Construction Worker Coordinator) and Bob Rice (WPC Coordinator
for the Penfield/Webster Golf Tournament); and Joan Powers,
Amy Carleton, Cathy Denson, and Bob Kizer (Folk Singing
Quartet) and Lou Muscoto and Vince Muscoto (Cello/Bass Duet)
who performed at the highly successful Coalition “Building a
House with Music” benefit concert.
At the final Coalition Steering Committee
meeting in late February, it was decided to continue the
Coalition in anticipation of building another home for Flower
City Habitat in 2006. St. Paul’s, Webster Presbyterian, and
Good Shepherd currently have committed to continuing as
members of the Coalition and the other Coalition churches are
in the process of considering their continued participation.
To develop a funding base and to facilitate the fund raising
process, the Coalition expects to maintain selected fund
raising activities in the interim, such as selling
Entertainment Books. Along with supporting these activities,
the Coalition encourages members of the Coalition churches to
also support the Penfield Coalition’s fund raising
activities for the house they are building for Flower City in
2004, since Penfield generously helped the Webster Coalition
meet its project funding requirements. One specific activity
that will benefit both Coalitions is the Penfield/Webster Golf
Tournament currently planned for June.
